Its a known fact that UC Berkeley students grind like no other college students. With such a studious campus it can often be difficult finding a place to study. Berkeley has a few awesome libraries, but they fill up fast, not to mention studying in a library every week drives me a little crazy. Sometimes you just need to get off campus and find a cool new spot to hunker down. Berkeley is brimming with amazing spots to hit the books, caffeinate, and relax between classes. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to focus, a lively atmosphere for group study, or a place to mix work with a cheeky drink, we've got you covered. Here are the top 10 off-campus study spots for Cal students:
A classic favorite for Cal students, Peet’s Coffee is located conveniently close to campus just a few blocks down Telegraph. Pete’s wifi always stays strong and they have consistently dependable coffee. Nothing too exciting, but strong coffee and wifi gets you into my top 10. I will give it credit for being one of the more aesthetic Peet’s out there.
Technically on campus but too good to leave off this list, Bear’s Lair Tavern is a great spot to catch up on work while enjoying a pint. The atmosphere is more lively than your day-to-day coffee shop and its convenient location makes Bear’s Lair a fun choice for those who want to study and unwind simultaneously. They also have a great happy hour that I touched on in another blog post so go check that out for more details!
Looking to mix studying with some socializing? Freehouse is the perfect place for a cheeky study beer. Located just steps from campus, this gastropub offers a laid-back vibe, great food, and plenty of seating—ideal for winding down after a long day of classes. Highly recommended this spot during warm days because their outdoor space is such a vibe. If the weather isn't being as kind their inside looks like that of an old castle! Super cool stuff!
Located near the Tang Center off Bancroft, Cafe Blue Door is a hidden gem for Cal students. Spacious and welcoming, it boasts an extensive menu with standout options like bagels, Nutella Hot Chocolate, and cider. The relaxing music and cozy vibes make it a prime spot for getting on your grind.
For those who love to pair studying with snacks, 85C Bakery is a dream come true. Known for its Asian-inspired baked goods and affordable drinks, this spot has plenty of space to spread out your notes and enjoy a sweet or savory treat. Their Vietnamese Iced Coffee has the fun crushed ice that takes it to the next level! It's kind of surprising I don't see more people working/studying in 85C because to me it's the perfect spot for it!
Cracking our top 5, located right next to campus, Cafe Strada is an iconic spot for Cal students. Open until midnight, it’s a lifesaver for late-night study sessions. The outdoor seating area, surrounded by greenery, provides a refreshing vibe, while their lattes keep you energized. Honestly Cafe Strada is too good for its own good because the place is always packed! If you could find a good spot every time then they would absolutely be number one or two on my list. If this were strictly a best cafes list, then Cafe Strada might very well have been number one, but it is just too busy to be a top tier study spot.
For the true coffee connoisseur, Sodoi Coffee Tasting House offers a curated coffee experience unlike any other. The minimalist ambiance and perfectly brewed pour-overs make it a great place to focus on your work. Bonus: Their quiet environment fosters productivity and everyone there is there to work. It falls a little on this list due to the same issue previously mentioned, its too damn good for its own good. Sodoi is often packed because of its great quality and proximity to campus.
Tucked away just off north campus, Delah Cafe is the sexiest coffee shop I have ever seen in my life. With plenty of seating and an assortment of delicious pastries, it’s an ideal spot for a productive study session. Pro tip: Try their chai latte for a warm, comforting boost.
If tea is your beverage of choice, Asha Tea House is the ultimate study destination. Located on Telegraph, this spot serves high-quality teas with an inviting, serene atmosphere. Their matcha latte is a must-try! Check my top Boba Spots in Berkeley blog to see where Asha Tea House ranks!
Cafe Milano is a bustling spot that’s perfect for group study sessions. Their extensive menu includes coffee, pasta, and pastries—so you’ll never have to worry about studying on an empty stomach. It’s a Berkeley staple with a vibrant atmosphere. I don't know what these Berkeley architects are on, but the number of gorgeous cafes in this city is utterly ridiculous!
